El Paso Walmart shooter to provide over $5.5 million restitution in federal case

El Paso Walmart shooter agrees to pay $5.5 million in restitution

Introduction

The gunman responsible for one of the deadliest attacks targeting Latinos in modern US history has agreed to pay more than $5.5 million in restitution to those impacted by the shooting, according to recent court filings.

Restitution Agreement

Patrick Crusius, who pleaded guilty to federal charges in the attack, reached an agreement with prosecutors to pay $5,557,005.55 in restitution to the claimants in the federal case. The identities of the claimants have been sealed.

Judicial Approval

Federal Judge David Guaderrama has approved the restitution agreement. CNN has reached out to the US Attorney’s office in the Western District of Texas for further information.

Attorney’s Response

An attorney for Crusius declined to comment, citing a state gag order and federal protective order that limits his ability to speak about the case.

Motive and Victims

Authorities have stated that Crusius specifically targeted Mexican people and immigrants during his rampage at the Walmart in El Paso. At least eight of the victims were Mexican nationals. Crusius is known to have posted a hate-filled screed online before the shooting, expressing xenophobic and White supremacist beliefs.

Guilty Plea and Sentencing

In February, Crusius pleaded guilty to 90 federal charges, including hate crimes, related to the 2019 shooting. He was subsequently sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences in July.

Ongoing State Case

Crusius is still facing a state trial, where prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. A scheduling hearing is set to take place on Monday, during which a trial date may be discussed.
