List of Unaccounted Individuals Released by Maui County Officials

Following the devastating wildfires that occurred on the island of Maui this month, Maui County officials have released a list of nearly 400 individuals who remain unaccounted for.
According to a recent news release by the county, the “validated list” containing 388 names was compiled by the FBI. The purpose of releasing the list is to aid in identifying individuals who have already been accounted for.
The current list represents a significant decrease from the previously estimated number of over 1,000 unaccounted individuals.

In a social media post on Thursday, Hawaii Governor Josh Green stated that the number of unaccounted individuals would significantly decrease as the FBI collaborates with other agencies to eliminate duplicate reports of missing persons.

The Maui County wildfires have resulted in at least 115 confirmed deaths, making it the deadliest wildfire disaster in the United States in over a century.
Investigation and Support for Affected Families
Recognizing the importance of the investigation, Police Chief John Pelletier explained that the release of the list of names will aid in the ongoing investigation. However, he also acknowledged that this could be distressing for individuals whose loved ones are listed. Nonetheless, the objective is to ensure a thorough and comprehensive investigation.
Impacts and Recovery Efforts in Lahaina
The wildfire disaster severely impacted the community of Lahaina in western Maui, once a vibrant economic and cultural hub. Countless neighborhoods and businesses were reduced to ashes, compelling some residents to escape by jumping into the ocean.
Search and Recovery Operations
Search and rescue teams, including cadaver dogs, have completed searches in all single-story homes within the affected area. They are currently expanding their efforts to multi-story homes and commercial properties.
