Senior Hezbollah commander killed in Israeli strike

Hezbollah Commander Killed in Israeli Air Strike

Hezbollah has confirmed the death of one of its senior commanders, Mohammed Nimah Nasser, in an Israeli air strike in southern Lebanon. This attack has escalated the ongoing cross-border violence between the two sides, raising concerns of a potential all-out war.

Retaliation with Rockets and Missiles

In response to the assassination of Nasser, Hezbollah retaliated by launching 100 rockets and missiles at Israeli military positions. The Israeli military reported that the projectiles caused fires in open areas but did not result in any injuries.

Hezbollah’s Military Operations

Nasser was in charge of Hezbollah’s Aziz Unit, responsible for launching rockets from south-western Lebanon. The Israeli military accused him of directing numerous terror attacks and described him as equivalent to Taleb Sami Abdullah, whose killing last month led to Hezbollah firing over 200 rockets into northern Israel in a single day.

Escalating Tensions and Diplomatic Efforts

Following the recent attacks, diplomatic efforts have intensified to de-escalate tensions. The UN and US have warned about the catastrophic consequences of a full-blown war that could involve Iran and other allied groups.

Continuous Border Conflicts

Since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza on 7 October, there have been regular exchanges of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border. Hezbollah has stated its support for Hamas, both being designated as terrorist organizations by several countries.

Israeli Stance on Restoring Security

Israeli officials have repeatedly emphasized their willingness to use military force to ensure security along the northern border if diplomatic solutions fail. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant expressed readiness to take necessary actions in Lebanon from a position of strength.

Hezbollah’s Position on War

Despite being heavily armed, Hezbollah has expressed a reluctance to engage in a full-scale war with Israel. The group has indicated that it will adhere to any ceasefire in Lebanon and has warned Israel to expect a robust response to any escalation.

Human Cost of Conflict

The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 400 reported deaths in Lebanon, primarily among Hezbollah fighters, and 25 casualties in Israel, mostly soldiers. Additionally, tens of thousands of individuals from both sides of the border have been displaced due to the violence.
