Speaker Mike Johnson Defends Trump and Discusses Rule of Law on Squawk Box
Squawk Box Interview with Mike Johnson
In a recent interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box, Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana addressed several topics, including GOP infighting over government funding and his support for former President Donald Trump.
Defending Trump’s Record
During the interview, Johnson passionately defended Trump, despite concerns raised by hosts Joe Kernen and Andrew Ross Sorkin about Trump’s approach to the rule of law and his public vows to use government powers against political opponents.
Policies and Principles over Personalities
When questioned about Trump’s divisive impact on the country, Johnson emphasized the importance of focusing on policies and principles rather than personalities when voting for a president. He highlighted Trump’s achievements, such as a thriving economy and relative peace, which he believes are lacking under President Biden.
Trump’s Belief in Election Fraud
The interview then turned to Trump’s belief that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him and how this belief contributed to the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. Johnson acknowledged that Trump genuinely believes he was cheated, despite contrary evidence, and that many people, including himself, take Trump at his word.
Trust and Accuracy
When questioned about the accuracy of Trump’s statements, Johnson acknowledged that not all politicians are consistently accurate in their remarks. He reiterated that Trump’s belief in election fraud is deeply rooted in his convictions, and that Trump has always been consistent in expressing this belief.
Rule of Law and Indictments
Regarding Trump’s indictment on multiple charges, Johnson argued that these charges are politically motivated and part of what he calls “lawfare” – a weaponization of the legal system against a candidate. He stood by Trump’s claim that the government has been used against him.
