Violence Escalates in the West Bank as Israel Prepares for Gaza Invasion

Raising Flags of Solidarity

In a rare show of unity, Palestinians in the West Bank raised Hamas flags during a solidarity march with Gaza, defying political divisions between Hamas and the dominant Fatah party. The act of solidarity comes at a time of mounting violence and instability, as Israel prepares for a possible land invasion of Gaza, causing fears of mass displacement among Palestinians.

Casualties and Clashes

Israeli security forces killed at least 11 Palestinians and injured dozens across the West Bank on Friday, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Four Palestinians were shot dead during clashes with Israeli forces near Tulkarem, while a 14-year-old was killed near a military checkpoint east of Nablus. Since Saturday, at least 43 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces and settlers.

The West Bank’s Security Challenge

The West Bank was thought to be Israel’s most pressing security challenge until the recent escalation in Gaza. The region has been physically separated and politically divided, with Israel controlling most of the West Bank and Hamas governing Gaza. Widespread anger and disillusionment among Palestinians due to the collapsing peace process, Israeli occupation, and aging leadership have led to the rise of militant groups in the West Bank.

Escalating Settler Violence

As Israel intensifies its war in Gaza, settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank is also on the rise. Armed settlers recently shot dead three Palestinians from the same family near Qusra village. The isolated town, which has been targeted by settlers in the past, has seen a surge in violence. The younger generation is growing increasingly frustrated and disillusioned, fueling the potential for further violence in the future.

Role of the Palestinian Authority

The Palestinian Authority, viewed as a security contractor for Israel, has been largely absent in addressing the ongoing conflict. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, while Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called for an end to Israeli aggression and warned of a second catastrophe for the Palestinian people. However, the Palestinian Authority’s lack of influence and popularity hinders its ability to effectively respond to the crisis.

A Call for Uprising

In response to the violence, hundreds of young Palestinians clashed with Israeli security forces in Ramallah, expressing their desire for an uprising and an end to the occupation. The current situation has reignited calls for the Palestinian Authority to take a stronger stance and work towards reclaiming Palestinian land.
