Former U.S. Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell believes that barring former President Trump from holding office could bring closure to the events of the Jan. 6 riots.

Gonell’s Perspective on Closure

In a recent interview on SiriusXM, Gonell expressed uncertainty about what closure means to him personally. He stated, “It could be that [Trump] gets barred from political office and never sets foot in the White House. It could be that he goes to jail. It could be that he loses everything he had because he put everybody else’s lives at risk.” Gonell believes that Trump should face consequences for his actions.

Gonell received a Congressional Gold Medal for his role in defending the Capitol against the rioters. He expressed frustration with individuals who continue to make excuses for Trump, stating, “I don’t get it why people continue to make excuses for him.”

Gonell suffered injuries during the Jan. 6 attack, preventing him from performing the physical aspects of his role. Prosecutors reported that rioter Kyle Fitzsimons caused a “career-ending and life-altering” shoulder injury to Gonell.
