Camping for Hunger: An Annual Event to Fight Hunger in the Shenandoah Valley
For the 15th consecutive year, The River 95.3 and WFTR/Fox Sports will be hosting the “Camping for Hunger” event from Monday, November 13th to Saturday, November 18th. This event aims to raise awareness about hunger in the northern Shenandoah Valley and collect non-perishable food and monetary donations. On-air personalities will be present 24/7 throughout the week to encourage participation and support from the community.
Since its inception in 2008, the Camping for Hunger Project has made a significant impact. The generosity of donors has resulted in over 190,000 pounds of food and personal items being collected, along with $135,000 in cash and gift cards. These donations have been crucial in assisting those in need within the community.
All contributions received during the event will be directed towards the Congregational-Community Action Project (CCAP). CCAP has been providing assistance to individuals and families facing hunger and poverty for many years. In 2023 alone, the organization has witnessed a nearly 100% increase in requests for assistance, highlighting the pressing need for support.
Several notable personalities from The River 95.3 and WFTR/Fox Sports, including Lonnie Hill, Randy Woodward, Ryan Rutherford, Scott Bradley, and station owner Andrew Shearer, will be taking part in the event. As a symbol of solidarity and commitment, they will be sleeping on the Camping for Hunger bus throughout the week. Their presence and dedication serve as a reminder of the importance of addressing hunger in the community.
Donations can be made by dropping off non-perishable food items and monetary contributions at the Camping for Hunger bus located at the Royal Plaza Shopping Center. The convenience of drop-off at any time during the week allows for widespread participation and support from the community.
The success of the Camping for Hunger event would not be possible without the collaboration and partnership of various organizations. Over the past 14 years, the Front Royal Police Department, CCAP, Royal Plaza Shopping Center, Century Link, and Dominion Ridge Academy have been steadfast partners in this initiative. Their commitment to fighting hunger in the Shenandoah Valley has been instrumental in the event’s continued success.
