University High School girls’ basketball team is gearing up for a challenging season as they aim to compete with the best teams in the state. Head coach Nick Lusk is confident in his team’s abilities and believes they have what it takes to make a deep postseason run. The Hawks are returning a pair of experienced seniors, Ella Simpson and Ashlyn Weaver, who will provide leadership and stability on the court.
Last season, the Hawks faced tough competition from perennial powers Wheeling Park and Morgantown, suffering four losses at their hands. This year, they are determined to turn the tables and prove themselves against these top teams. The team’s schedule is filled with challenging matchups, including a season opener against defending Class AAAA champion Morgantown High School. UHS is hoping to avenge their previous losses and make a statement early in the season.
Senior Ella Simpson, who was a first team all-state honoree last year, is expected to shoulder much of the scoring load once again. She has been working on improving her outside shooting and ball handling skills to enhance her versatility on the court. Simpson’s goal is to end her high school career with a trip to the state tournament in Charleston.
Senior Ashlyn Weaver is the emotional leader of the team and has been working hard in the weight room to improve her strength and conditioning. Weaver believes that the team was overlooked last year and is determined to prove their worth this season. The Hawks had a successful run in the postseason last year, winning sectionals before falling in the regional round.
In addition to Simpson and Weaver, the Hawks have a solid core of players with varsity experience from last season. Junior point guard Julia Maisel and junior forward/center Lexi Simpson will play key roles on the team. Sophomore Bri Fox is expected to see increased playing time, along with juniors Alexa Johnson and Maddie Antonini. Freshman Riley Braham, a 5-foot-11 post player, will add much-needed size to the team.
Due to their lack of height, the Hawks will rely on a pressure defense to force turnovers and create scoring opportunities in transition. Coach Lusk believes that the team excels in the fast-paced game and wants them to push the ball up the court whenever possible. UHS will also participate in the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, providing additional opportunities for competition and growth.
The Hawks are determined to prove themselves against the top teams in the state and make a deep tournament run. With a talented roster and experienced leadership, they have the potential to be a force to be reckoned with in their district. The season opener against Morgantown High School will be a crucial test for the team as they look to start the season on a high note.
