Jan. 6 Capitol Attack: Ex-Proud Boy Member Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence

Former Proud Boys Member Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Capitol Attack

One of the key figures in the January 6 attacks on the U.S. Capitol, Dominic Pezzola, has been handed a 10-year prison sentence. Although not a leader within the Proud Boys, Pezzola played a significant role in shaping the events of that fateful day.

Acts of Terrorism: The Legal Consequence

U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly agreed with the government’s recommendation to classify Pezzola’s actions as acts of terrorism, resulting in a heightened sentence. This decision was primarily based on the intention behind his actions, which aimed to exert pressure on the government through threats and acts of force.

An Active Participant’s Violent Involvement

During the assault, Pezzola utilized a stolen police riot shield to smash through a window at the Capitol, enabling other rioters to enter the building. He even recorded a video of himself celebrating his destructive actions. Prosecutors presented evidence that Pezzola, along with fellow rioters, violently seized an officer’s shield, dragging him to the ground and endangering his life.

A Key Player in the Conspiracy

According to the prosecution, Pezzola was one of the most aggressive participants in the conspiracy that unfolded on January 6. They made it clear that his charges were not based on his political affiliation, but rather on his conduct, which they described as some of the most egregious within the conspiracy.

Regret Followed by Controversial Outburst

Pezzola expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging that he had become swept up in the chaos of that day. However, after his sentencing, he defiantly shouted, “Trump won!” while raising his fist in support of the former president.

Continued Accountability for the Proud Boys

This sentencing comes on the heels of the lengthy prison terms given to two other prominent Proud Boys, Joseph Biggs and Zachary Rehl, for their involvement in the Capitol attack. Another Proud Boy, Ethan Nordean, awaits sentencing, while former Proud Boys chairman Enrique Tarrio is scheduled for sentencing next week.
