Charges and Arrest

Christopher Belliveau, a 38-year-old man from Sanford, Maine, is facing five felony charges for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. The charges include civil disorder, assaulting officers with a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct in a restricted building with a deadly weapon, unauthorized entry into a restricted building with a deadly weapon, and engaging in physical violence with a deadly weapon.

Belliveau also faces misdemeanor charges for disorderly conduct, physical violence, and demonstrating in the Capitol buildings. He was arrested by FBI agents in Berwick, Maine, and was scheduled to appear in the US District Court in Maine.

Alleged Actions

According to prosecutors, Belliveau was part of the group of rioters supporting former President Donald J. Trump who marched to the Capitol building from a rally in Washington, D.C. He was seen among a crowd on the northwest lawn behind temporary fencing made of interlocking bicycle racks.

At around 2:10 p.m., Belliveau allegedly approached police officers while carrying a bullhorn and then discharged pepper spray from a green canister at an officer. He then fled the scene, with another rioter knocking the officer to the ground.

Surveillance video reportedly shows Belliveau entering the Capitol, confronting police, and leaving the building shortly after.

Legal Proceedings and Investigation

Since the January 6, 2021, incident, over 1,450 individuals have been charged across the United States for crimes related to the Capitol breach. More than 500 individuals have been charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation into the attack is ongoing.
