Marjorie Taylor Greene Advocates for a New January 6 Select Committee

Marjorie Taylor Greene and Her Unwavering Quest for “Government Conspiracy” Proof

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia congresswoman, is unyielding in her mission to prove that the Capitol attackers on January 6 were not acting independently but were under the control of a secretive federal conspiracy. Despite lacking evidence, she claims that the more than 40,000 hours of footage released by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson contains undeniable proof of this alleged government plot.

The Ongoing Allegation of FBI Involvement

For a long time, the GOP, including figures like Ms. Greene, has propagated the desperate claim that the riot was orchestrated by the FBI from the start. They argue that the President’s supporters would have remained peaceful if not for covert government agents inciting them. However, there is no concrete evidence to support these allegations. In fact, FBI Director Christopher Wray has publicly dismissed them as baseless.

Ms. Greene’s Challenge to the Speaker

In a tweet, Ms. Greene challenged Speaker Johnson to establish a new select committee to investigate the events of January 6. Her proposal, unlikely to gain traction, suggests populating the committee solely with Trump loyalists who would continue spreading falsehoods about the attack under the guise of a congressional inquiry.

Insisting on MAGA Innocence

Ms. Greene adamantly asserts that the Capitol attack was not carried out by MAGA (Make America Great Again) supporters. However, the evidence disproves this claim. President Trump and his team openly encouraged their supporters to gather at the Capitol, and there were numerous reports of White House officials expressing concerns about potential violence before January 6.

Ignoring Contrition from Rioters

Despite imprisoned January 6 rioters refusing to show remorse for their actions and defending their violence in court, Ms. Greene and her allies disregard these facts. They persist in their belief that outside influence was the primary driver of the attack.

The Unlikelihood of a New Committee

It is highly unlikely that Ms. Greene’s request for a new committee will be granted. The release of the committee’s footage was a political move to appease the far-right, and Speaker Johnson is unlikely to bring the Capitol’s bloodshed back into the spotlight during the upcoming presidential election year. He has the responsibility of safeguarding vulnerable Republicans in the lower chamber from Democratic challengers.

The Far-Right’s Obsession and its Impact on Democracy

Ms. Greene’s tweet highlights the far-right’s fixation on their 2020 election loss and their willingness to undermine democratic institutions to prevent a similar defeat. Their preoccupation poses a threat to American democracy.
