The “QAnon Shaman” Runs for Congress
In a surprising turn of events, the infamous “QAnon Shaman” has announced his candidacy for Congress. Jacob Chansley, who gained notoriety for his role in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, has filed paperwork to run as a libertarian in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District.
A Familiar Face
Chansley, known for donning a horned fur hat and red, white, and blue face paint during the riot, made headlines as he sat inside the Senate chamber. However, his actions have resulted in legal consequences.
A Change of Heart
Chansley has pleaded guilty to a felony charge of obstructing an official proceeding in relation to the Capitol attack. He was sentenced to 41 months in prison in November 2021 and was released to a halfway house in March. It’s worth noting that Chansley has distanced himself from the QAnon movement, according to the Associated Press.
A Vacancy in Congress
The current representative of Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, Rep. Debbie Lesko, announced earlier this year that she would not seek re-election. With her term ending in January 2025, Chansley sees an opportunity to step into the political arena.
A Growing List of Convictions
Chansley is just one of the many individuals who have faced sentencing for their involvement in the Capitol riot. According to AP, over 700 people have been sentenced in connection to federal crimes related to the attack.
Legality and Limitations
While the U.S. Constitution does not explicitly bar felons from holding federal office, Arizona law prohibits felons from voting until they have completed their sentence.
