China’s President Xi Jinping Calls for Two-State Solution in Israel-Hamas Conflict

In a meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his belief that a two-state solution is the “fundamental way out” of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Xi emphasized the importance of establishing an independent Palestine as a means to resolve the ongoing crisis.
Xi also highlighted the urgent need for a ceasefire to prevent the conflict from escalating further and causing a severe humanitarian crisis. He expressed China’s willingness to work with Egypt and Arab nations to find a comprehensive, just, and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue.
China’s Support for Egypt’s Role in Alleviating Tensions
During the meeting, Xi commended Egypt for playing an important role in cooling tensions in the region. He expressed China’s support for Egypt’s efforts to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, acknowledging the significance of providing assistance to those in need.
It is worth noting that Egypt recently agreed to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza through the Rafah border crossing, following a deal brokered by US President Joe Biden and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
China-Russia Cooperation in Addressing the Conflict
President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the Israel-Hamas conflict during their meeting at the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing. Putin referred to the conflict as a “common threat,” which brought Russia and China closer together in their efforts to find a resolution.
Both China and Russia have called for a ceasefire in the conflict and have refrained from explicitly condemning Hamas. This stance contrasts with the strong support for Israel expressed by the US and European leaders.
China’s Position and Mediation Efforts
While China has faced criticism from Israel and US officials for not condemning Hamas and Russia’s actions in Ukraine, it has positioned itself as a neutral mediator in the Israel-Hamas conflict. China has sought to promote peace talks and push for a ceasefire in the region.
China’s Middle East Envoy, Zhai Jun, will be sent to the region this week to facilitate peace talks and reinforce the call for a ceasefire. China’s involvement in the conflict is motivated, in part, by its economic interests in both Russia and the Middle East, particularly the importation of oil and gas.
