Reports emerged on Tuesday of a ship coming under attack in the Red Sea near Yemen, with indications that the vessel sustained damage and began taking on water. While no group immediately claimed responsibility, suspicions pointed towards Yemen’s Houthi rebels, known for their previous attacks on ships in the region.

The attack took place off the port city of Hodeida in the southern Red Sea, close to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait connecting it to the Gulf of Aden. According to reports from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center, the vessel, identified as the Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier Laax, reported damage to its cargo hold due to a missile strike.
Houthi Activity in the Region
The Houthi rebels have been increasingly active in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, conducting over 50 attacks on shipping vessels since November. Their actions are fueled by their demand for Israel to halt the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in significant casualties among Palestinians.
