Defeating the MAGA Right: The Path Forward

This National Committee (NC) meeting is a special one, as it brings us back to our roots here in New York. Winston Unity Hall holds a significant place in our party’s history, as it was where Gus Hall and Henry Winston provided strong leadership for nearly two decades. These walls have witnessed remarkable stories, from the integration of American Bandstand to the meeting between Henry Winston and Martin Luther King Jr. Our agenda today is full, with a focus on defeating the MAGA right and building our party.

The Ongoing Threat of the MAGA Right

The danger posed by the MAGA right and its leader, Donald Trump, is far from over. They continue to attack voting rights, abortion rights, and the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. Open racism has also become normalized, with Republican leaders failing to condemn white supremacists. The “Great Replacement” theory has fueled this hatred, leading to an increase in mass shootings. We must recognize that white supremacy and male supremacy are deeply intertwined, and we cannot fight one without addressing the other.

The Next Election and Anti-MAGA Mobilization

Looking ahead to the 2024 election, it seems likely that we will witness a rematch between Biden and Trump. Trump’s coalition, backed by big business and tinged with fascism, still holds significant power. However, his support is beginning to fracture due to the insurrection and legal troubles he faces. Ruling class factions are exploring alternative candidates, many of whom share Trump’s ideology. Biden’s coalition, on the other hand, has been strengthened by the passage of key legislation and endorsements from influential organizations. Nevertheless, a mass movement like the one that propelled Biden to victory in 2020 has yet to fully emerge. The success of the anti-MAGA majority will depend on addressing bread-and-butter issues and mobilizing the people’s front, with labor playing a crucial role. We should also consider the entry of Cornel West into the political arena, as his platform and intellectual standing may resonate with some on the left.

Beware of Populist Alliances

While populism may appear anti-corporate in form, it often aligns with reactionary ideologies. We must be cautious of movements that provide cover for right-wing agendas, such as the misguided belief that Trump is a “peace” candidate. Associations with right-wing populists, including “MAGA communists” and followers of Lyndon LaRouche, can undermine the progressive goals we strive for. It is crucial to stay true to our principles and reject alliances that compromise our values.
