Former Uvalde Police Chief Indicted
The former police chief of the school police force in Uvalde, Tex., Pedro “Pete” Arredondo, has been indicted in connection with the botched response to a 2022 shooting that resulted in the tragic deaths of 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary.

Arredondo, along with former officer Adrian Gonzales, faced 10 felony counts of abandoning or endangering a child. Arredondo’s bond was set at $100,000, reflecting $10,000 per charge, and he was swiftly released after posting bail. The charges, originally reported by the San Antonio Express-News, are the first criminal charges in the case.

Legal experts called the charges an unprecedented application of the child-endangerment statute. They speculated that the 10 counts may correspond to the 10 children who survived the harrowing attack by pretending to be dead or hiding among the deceased victims in the classroom.

The delay in the law enforcement response to the shooting, which lasted 77 minutes before confronting the gunman, drew widespread criticism. The U.S. Justice Department’s scathing 575-page report highlighted the shortcomings of the police commanders and state law enforcement for not acting promptly.

Arredondo, who was in charge of the school police force at the time, repeatedly prevented officers from entering the classroom where the shooting took place. Despite his claims of not being in charge, the Justice Department review identified him as the “de facto on-scene commander” who failed to act decisively.

Another officer, Gonzales, correctly identified the classroom where the tragedy unfolded but hesitated to approach it. The delayed response hampered emergency medical personnel from providing timely assistance to the victims, leading to further challenges in the aftermath of the shooting.
Accountability and Legal Proceedings
The charges against Arredondo and Gonzales come after intense pressure from victims’ families for accountability. The district attorney’s office faced skepticism and criticism during the investigation but eventually convened a grand jury that returned an indictment within the statute of limitations.
