Israeli airstrike on Gaza school results in more than 30 casualties during conflict with Hamas

Israeli Strike on School Sheltering Palestinians

An Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza resulted in the deaths of more than 30 people, including 23 women and children, as reported by local health officials. The Israeli military stated that Hamas militants were using the school as a base.

UNRWA School Hit in Predawn Strike

The predawn strike targeted the al-Sardi School, run by the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). Witnesses and hospital officials revealed that the school was filled with Palestinians seeking refuge from Israeli operations in northern Gaza.

Mass Casualties and Overwhelmed Hospitals

The casualties from the school strike overwhelmed the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, which had already been inundated with ambulances due to the ongoing incursion. Hospital records and reports indicated at least 33 dead from the strike, including children and women.

Israeli Military Claims

An Israeli military spokesman claimed that the strike was in response to militants using the school compound to launch attacks on Israeli soldiers. The military also stated that steps were taken to minimize harm to civilians before the strike.

UNRWA Commissioner-General’s Response

Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner-general of UNRWA, disputed claims of armed groups within the school and mentioned that 6,000 people were seeking shelter there when the strike occurred.

Continued Conflict and International Response

The conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate, with casualties mounting and international outrage growing. Different demands for cease-fires and withdrawals from both sides have complicated efforts to end the war.
