Two Injured and Thousands Without Power as Typhoon Haikui Nears Taiwan
Nearly 10,000 households in Taiwan have lost power and two individuals have been injured as Typhoon Haikui moves closer to the island, according to the island’s official Central News Agency (CNA).
Injuries and Power Outages
The two injured individuals were traveling in a van when a tree fell on the vehicle, leaving them trapped inside, as reported by CNA. While they sustained injuries, they were conscious and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Electricity Disruptions
As of 2 p.m. local time on Sunday, over 9,300 households in Taitung and Hualien counties have experienced power outages. Repair efforts are currently underway, stated Taipower, the state electricity provider.
Heavy Rains in Taipei
The capital city, Taipei, is currently facing heavy rainfall due to the approaching typhoon.
Typhoon Haikui’s Progress
According to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau, Typhoon Haikui is moving westwards at a speed of 7km per hour, accompanied by winds of up to 155kph. It is expected to make landfall in Taiwan’s eastern regions, bringing heavy rainfall.
Potential Hazards
The weather bureau has cautioned that the heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding and landslides in certain parts of the country. Mountainous areas, such as Hualien county, could experience more than 500mm of total precipitation.
Evacuations and Cancellations
As a precautionary measure, more than 2,800 residents in seven counties and municipalities have been evacuated as of 7 a.m. local time on Sunday, as announced by Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior. Additionally, schools and work have been suspended in several regions.
Flight Cancellations
Due to the typhoon, a total of 222 domestic flights and 37 international flights departing from Taiwan have been canceled, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications.
Impact on Hong Kong
In neighboring Hong Kong, another typhoon named Saola has caused at least 86 injuries after making landfall in the city. The typhoon has resulted in fallen trees, flooding, and landslides.
