Hurricane Lee Approaches Bermuda

As Hurricane Lee makes its way towards Bermuda, it has already begun to unleash strong winds on the island. This massive storm is expected to bring heavy rain, wind, and coastal flooding to coastal New England and Atlantic Canada. The effects of the storm are expected to be felt from Friday through the weekend.
Bermuda has already experienced tropical storm-force wind gusts and heavy rain is expected to arrive later in the morning. The entire island is currently under a tropical storm warning as Hurricane Lee tracks west of Bermuda.
Lee’s Path and Intensity
As of Thursday morning, Hurricane Lee was located about 265 miles southwest of Bermuda. The storm is churning with maximum sustained winds of up to 100 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Potential Impact on New England
Hurricane and tropical storm watches have been issued for many coastal areas of New England in anticipation of Hurricane Lee’s arrival. The storm’s center is expected to pass close to the region’s southeast, bringing strong winds to portions of New England as early as Friday evening. Maine and Atlantic Canada are also likely to be affected by Lee’s presence over the weekend, as it moves as a “large and dangerous cyclone”.
Massive Radius of Damaging Winds
Although Hurricane Lee is expected to weaken as it approaches New England, it will still have a massive radius of damaging winds. Coastal areas of New England and Canada’s Atlantic provinces will be pounded by these winds, regardless of whether the storm makes landfall.
Potential Hazards and Watches
The National Hurricane Center has warned of potential hurricane conditions, heavy rainfall, and coastal flooding in eastern Maine on Saturday. Hurricane watches are in effect for this area, as well as parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Storm surge flooding of up to 4 feet could also potentially inundate parts of southeastern Massachusetts late Friday and Saturday. A storm surge watch has been issued for this area, including Cape Cod and Nantucket. Additionally, a tropical storm watch is in effect for large swaths of coastal New England, including Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.
Concerns about Flash Flooding
The heavy rainfall brought by Hurricane Lee poses a risk of flash flooding, particularly in already rain-drenched areas of the Northeast. The ground in these regions is already saturated, increasing the likelihood of flash flooding. Over the past two weeks, parts of Massachusetts have experienced rainfall levels more than 300% above normal values, leading to dangerous flooding in some areas.
Potential Power Outages
The combination of saturated soil and strong winds from Hurricane Lee increases the likelihood of downed trees, which could knock out power lines and cause widespread power outages.
