Accusations at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station

Russia, currently occupying the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in Ukraine, has pointed fingers at Kyiv for an alleged attack on a dome above one of the plant’s shutdown reactors.

Despite Ukraine denying the claim, the nature of the weapon used in the attack remains unclear. The incident occurred shortly after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces in 2022.

Rosatom, the Russian state-owned nuclear agency, identified the weapon as a drone.

The plant officials reported no significant damage, with radiation levels remaining normal. However, Rosatom later disclosed that three individuals sustained injuries in the vicinity of the plant’s canteen.

International Response and Concerns

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with experts on-site, confirmed the drone detonation as relayed by the Russian-run plant. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi urged caution to prevent any actions that could compromise nuclear safety.

Plant Status and Front-line Conflict

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant houses six VVER-1000 V-320 reactors with uranium-235. While some are in cold shutdown or under repair, the facility also contains spent nuclear fuel.

The ongoing conflict near the plant raises concerns of a potential nuclear disaster, with both Ukraine and Russia accusing each other of attacks.

In a recent incident, a woman lost her life due to shrapnel from a downed Ukrainian drone in Russia’s Belgorod region. This event follows a series of drone attacks and air defense actions in the border regions.

Ukraine’s use of drones to counter Russian forces has been evident, with President Zelenskyy emphasizing their role in protecting Ukrainian lives and diminishing Russia’s military capabilities.

Continued Attacks and Humanitarian Crisis

Recent strikes in Kharkiv and Zaporizhia resulted in civilian casualties, prompting Zelenskyy to call for an end to the ongoing terror and increased international support.

During a fundraising event, Zelenskyy stressed the critical need for US Congress approval of military aid to Ukraine to sustain the defense against Russian aggression.
