The tremor originated 18 kilometers south of Hualien city, shaking the island’s eastern coast, causing numerous buildings to collapse, triggering landslides, and tragically claiming at least four lives.

Initial tsunami alerts in Taiwan, southern Japan, and the Philippines were issued, but later lifted as waves remained below half a meter. The Taiwanese military mobilized for disaster relief, schools and workplaces suspended operations, and outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen urged prompt response to minimize the disaster’s impact.
