On October 14, 2022, the estimated losses from the attack on the U.S. Capitol, which disrupted the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory, were approximately $2.9 million.
DOJ’s Ongoing Efforts in Capitol Breach Investigation
38 months after the tumultuous attack, the Department of Justice (DOJ) remains committed to holding those responsible for the events of January 6, 2021, accountable. Despite former President Donald Trump‘s bid for the GOP presidential nomination, the investigation into the Capitol breach, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the FBI’s Washington Field Office, has progressed rapidly.
Over 1,358 defendants from almost all 50 states and the District of Columbia have been charged for various crimes related to the attack.
Criminal Charges and Guilty Pleas
- Approximately 486 defendants were charged with assaulting officers or employees.
- Eleven individuals were arrested for attacking members of the media.
- Over 350 defendants have been charged with obstructing official proceedings.
As per the DOJ, around 769 individuals pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the Capitol breach. Notably, 238 pleaded guilty to felonies, including assaulting law enforcement officers and obstruction during a civil disorder. Out of them, 130 have been sentenced to prison terms of up to 151 months for assaulting officers.
Trials have resulted in 152 individuals being found guilty, with 81 convicted of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers and/or obstructing officers during a civil disorder.
Sentencing and Delays
Approximately 497 federal defendants have been sentenced to periods of incarceration, with 164 sentenced to home detention. Trump, facing 91 felony charges, has caused delays in his prosecution, including charges related to his alleged role in the Capitol attack.
FBI’s Ongoing Investigation and Public Assistance
The FBI is seeking public assistance in identifying individuals involved in the attack, with an emphasis on violent assaults on federal officers. Citizens nationwide have provided crucial help, and the FBI continues to seek tips to identify suspects like Evan Neumann, Adam Villarreal, and Paul Belosic.
