George Floyd’s Family Urges Congress to Enact Police Reform, 4 Years After His Killing

Renewed Call for Policing Reform in Honor of George Floyd

The family of George Floyd marked the fourth anniversary of his murder by urging Congress to pass legislation aimed at reforming policing in America. Philonise Floyd, George Floyd’s brother, emphasized the need for change during a recent news conference where democratic lawmakers introduced the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This legislation, which aims to hold law enforcement accountable for misconduct, passed in the House in 2020 but faced challenges in the Senate. Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee reintroduced the bill, calling for police training and policy reforms to prevent unnecessary deaths.

Legislative Action for Police Accountability

Rep. Jackson Lee highlighted the importance of enacting comprehensive reforms to policing practices through the George Floyd #JusticeInPolicingAct of 2024. Philonise Floyd echoed the sentiment, stressing the need to protect people of color from being unfairly targeted by law enforcement. The tragic death of George Floyd in police custody in 2020 sparked global protests against racial injustice and police brutality, underscoring the urgency for change.

Justice for George Floyd

George Floyd, a Black man, lost his life at the hands of a White police officer who knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes, despite his pleas for help. The officer, Derek Chauvin, was convicted of murder and manslaughter and sentenced to more than 22 years in prison. In a federal court, he pleaded guilty to depriving Floyd of his civil rights. Three other former officers involved in Floyd’s murder also faced charges and received prison sentences for their roles in the tragic incident.

Turning Tragedy into Activism

Following George Floyd’s death, his family members, like Selwyn Jones and Gwen Carr, whose son Eric Garner was also a victim of police violence, have channeled their grief into activism. Jones co-founded Hope929.org to empower marginalized communities in honor of his nephew. Despite frustrations with the legislative process, he remains dedicated to uplifting Floyd’s legacy and advocating for meaningful change.

Continuing the Fight for Justice

As the fight for policing reform continues, Jones and his family are committed to honoring George Floyd’s memory. They plan to participate in a celebration in Charlotte, North Carolina, to commemorate Floyd’s life and legacy. Despite challenges and setbacks, they remain resolute in their pursuit of justice and equality for all.
