Old Dominion Basketball Coach Jeff Jones Announces Retirement After Health Struggles
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Old Dominion basketball coach Jeff Jones, who recently stepped away from his coaching duties due to a heart attack and prostate cancer, tearfully announced his retirement on Monday. The 63-year-old Jones spoke at a news conference surrounded by family, friends, staff members, and current and former players, expressing gratitude for his 41-year coaching career.
Jones revealed that the heart attack he suffered in Honolulu just before Christmas prompted him to reflect on his life and what truly matters. Additionally, while recovering at home, he received news that he will require treatment for prostate cancer for the fourth time. Despite these challenges, Jones expressed his fortune in being associated with numerous individuals throughout his coaching career.
With a coaching record of 560-418 and eight NCAA Tournament appearances, Jones has had a successful 32-year coaching career. Notably, he led his alma mater, Virginia, to an Elite Eight appearance in 1995 and an NIT championship in 1992. Jones acknowledged that his health has improved since stepping away from coaching, attributing his progress to better eating habits and reduced stress levels.
Although Jones considered returning for one more year to conclude his coaching career differently, he ultimately prioritized his health, family, and happiness. He emphasized the importance of being content and stated that happiness is underrated. With 560 wins, Jones retires as the 19th winningest active coach in Division I and tied for 91st all-time, with victories against notable coaches like Mike Krzyzewski.
Jones has been the coach at Old Dominion since 2013, accumulating 204 wins with the Monarchs. He previously coached at Virginia and American, where he faced various challenges, including his battles with prostate cancer. Jones was named Virginia’s coach in 1990, becoming the youngest head coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history at age 29.
