Financial constraints force many individuals to ration their insulin, leading to hospitalizations and worsening health conditions like kidney disease, cardiac issues, vision loss, and even death.

The Financial Barrier

Research indicates that 1 in 6 people with diabetes ration their insulin, underscoring the persistent financial challenge faced by many Americans. Throughout my career and retirement, I have been an advocate for fairer and more affordable prescription drug costs.

The Inflation Reduction Act

In August 2022, the Biden administration introduced the Inflation Reduction Act, a groundbreaking law that not only addresses climate issues but also tackles healthcare disparities by confronting pharmaceutical companies. This legislation capped monthly insulin costs for Medicare beneficiaries at $35, providing significant savings for seniors and non-seniors alike.

Personal Impact and Relief

As a diabetic and retired nurse with firsthand experience of the challenges, I understand the crucial need for accessible healthcare. The Inflation Reduction Act has brought relief by instituting a copay cap, eliminating fluctuations caused by the Medicare “donut hole.” This change has significantly reduced my expenses, allowing me to prioritize my health without financial strain.
