Gen Z, or individuals aged 12-27, are experiencing high levels of stress that are causing them to age faster than ever before. Many young adults are dealing with issues such as premature balding, greying hair, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. While genetics and health conditions play a role, the primary cause of these symptoms is stress. Teens and young adults are under immense pressure due to increased competition and high expectations from themselves and others.

Stress and its Impact on Physical Appearance

Dr Bhuvanashree N, a dermatologist at Buvvis Dermagicalz, explains that stress is a significant factor in premature aging among young adults. Teens who are conscious of their looks seek treatments for aging-related concerns. Mahima A, a 21-year-old struggling with stress-induced hair thinning, tried various natural remedies before consulting a dermatologist. She received Vitamin B12 injections directly into her scalp to promote hair growth, which proved to be effective. Many young adults also turn to botox injections for issues like crow’s feet and fine lines.

The Pressure to Meet High Standards

The causes of stress among Gen Z are multifaceted. Reshma, a 19-year-old architecture student, feels burdened by high expectations despite efforts to create a stress-free environment at her college. She strives for perfection and fears letting others down. Maintaining a healthy diet becomes difficult, and the lack of communication with her mother adds to her stress. Sarathi, a 26-year-old product designer, shares a similar sentiment. Despite having a well-paying job and a good position in her company, she felt the need for a secondary income due to societal pressures. The constant grind culture led to burnout, prompting her to reassess her priorities.

The Psychological and Social Impact

Vandhana S, a Chennai-based clinical psychologist, highlights common issues among Gen Z, including anxiety, body image issues, depression, eating disorders, and addiction. Stressors can be biological, psychological, and social. Many individuals in this age group excessively worry and overthink due to poor coping mechanisms. These coping mechanisms, combined with stress, disrupt the sleep cycle and hinder the body’s ability to heal from daily wear and tear, ultimately accelerating the aging process. Moreover, Gen Z members are more susceptible to health conditions like heart problems and insulin resistance compared to older generations.

Health Conditions and the Importance of Regulation

Dr V Mohan, chairman of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, points out that young adults are experiencing health conditions like type 1 and 2 diabetes at an alarming rate. Improper diet, lack of exercise, stress, and high sugar consumption contribute to these issues. The carotid artery, which supplies blood, thickens prematurely in young adults, leading to various problems, including hair loss. To combat these issues, Vandhana suggests regulating the biological clock by fixing sleep cycles, exercising within limits, avoiding harmful supplements, and engaging in hobbies that promote relaxation.


The stress-aging cycle among Gen Z is a growing concern. The pressure to meet high standards and the lack of effective coping mechanisms contribute to premature aging and various health conditions. It is crucial for young adults to prioritize self-care, regulate their biological clocks, and seek professional help when needed. By addressing these issues, they can improve their overall well-being and slow down the aging process.
