Two Jan. 6 Rioters Convicted of Donating to MAGA Republican Joe Kent

The Controversial Campaign Contributions to Joe Kent

In a surprising turn of events, two individuals convicted for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot made contributions to the congressional campaign of Republican Joe Kent. Kent, known for his unwavering support for Donald Trump and controversial views on the events of that day, found himself at the center of scrutiny due to these donations.

The Donors

David Charles Rhine and Alexander Sheppard, both federally convicted for their roles in the riot, contributed to Kent’s campaign. Rhine, an accounting firm owner, donated $250 in 2021 and $250 in 2024. Sheppard, one of the first rioters to enter the Capitol, contributed $500 in February 2022. Their actions raised eyebrows as they had been convicted on various charges related to the riot, leading to questions about Kent’s association with them.

The Justice Department’s Convictions

Rhine faced multiple misdemeanor charges and received a four-month prison sentence. Sheppard, on the other hand, was convicted on five counts, including a felony, and sentenced to 19 months in prison. His brazen actions during the riot, captured on video, brought him notoriety in connection with the events of that day.

Election Cycle Donations

During the 2022 election cycle, Kent also received donations from another alleged rioter, Carlos Ayala. Despite calls to return the donations, Kent’s campaign stood by its decision, citing Ayala’s right to due process. This stance further fueled the controversy surrounding Kent’s campaign and its ties to individuals involved in the Capitol riot.

The Political Landscape

As Kent vies for a congressional seat against Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, his connections to the more extreme elements of the MAGA movement have come under scrutiny. Gluesenkamp Perez has wasted no time in highlighting Kent’s endorsement of election-denying conspiracy theories and his close alignment with Trump’s views on the events of January 6.

The Republican Primary

With the upcoming Republican primary on the horizon, Kent faces competition from Leslie Lewallen and Leslie “Nick” French. Despite his controversial associations, Kent remains a fundraising leader in the race, setting the stage for a contentious political battle in the months ahead.
