Former U.S. Capitol Sgt. Aquilino Gonell carries a small glass box with a metal shard from a door destroyed during the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection. Gonell endured physical and mental injuries, two surgeries, and PTSD as rioters loyal to former President Donald Trump breached the Capitol.
Joined by fellow Capitol Officer Harry Dunn in Las Vegas, they spoke about the harrowing events of January 6, 2021, at a campaign event for President Joe Biden’s reelection.
Capitol Riot and Fallout
Protesters disrupted the certification of Biden’s election victory, leading to a violent clash with Capitol Police officers. Trump supporters breached the Capitol, resulting in the death of five individuals, including a Capitol Police officer.
Hundreds entered the Capitol, causing chaos in the halls, Senate chamber, and lawmakers’ offices.
Officers Speak Out
In Las Vegas, Gonell and Dunn expressed their support for Biden as a symbol of democracy and decency. Dunn recounted the horror during the riot and held Trump accountable for inciting violence.
Dunn testified at a House committee hearing investigating the attack, urging politicians to denounce the events of January 6.
Call for Accountability
Over 1,200 individuals have been arrested in connection to the riot, including several from Nevada. The officers emphasized the importance of supporting law enforcement and upholding the rule of law.
They criticized Trump’s response to the events and stressed the need for politicians to condemn the violence to protect democracy.
Protecting Democracy
U.S. Rep. Dina Titus highlighted the significance of standing against such attacks on democracy, warning that similar incidents could occur at state capitols.
