Trump Asks Federal Court to Toss 2020 Case

According to a recent CBS News poll, a majority of Americans believe former President Donald Trump should not have
legal immunity for his actions during his presidency. The poll also reveals that most Republicans feel Trump
should be immune from criminal prosecution in the context of the January 6 investigation and charges.

Public Opinion on Trump’s Immunity

In a survey conducted by CBS News, over 60% of Americans were against the idea of granting Trump immunity for any
actions he took while he was president. This sentiment was shared by both Democrats and independents.

Republicans’ Stance on Criminal Prosecution

Interestingly, most Republicans believe that Trump should be immune from criminal prosecution in relation to the
January 6 events. This includes both Trump supporters (MAGA identifiers) and non-MAGA Republicans.

Perception of Indictments and Investigations

The poll also showed a divide between Republicans and Democrats regarding the indictments and investigations of
Trump. While a majority of Republicans view them as an attack on people like them and an unfair attempt to hinder
Trump’s 2024 campaign, Democrats and independents see these legal actions as upholding the rule of law.

Survey Methodology

The CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,157 U.S. adult residents
between January 3-5, 2024. The sample was weighted based on gender, age, race, education, and past vote, using
data from the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey. The margin of error for the
survey is ±2.8 points.
