Chair of Jan. 6 committee criticizes Trump’s ‘election integrity’ event featuring Johnson

Rep. Thompson Criticizes Trump’s Election Integrity Event

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) recently condemned former President Trump’s upcoming “election integrity” gathering alongside Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). Thompson, who led the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, labeled the event a “sham,” as per a statement released by the Biden administration.

Sham Event Challenged by Thompson

The event, slated as a press conference to introduce legislation preventing noncitizens from voting, is planned at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. Notably, it is already illegal for noncitizens to participate in federal elections.

Foreign Nationals Prohibited from Voting

Although the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 prohibits foreign nationals from voting in federal elections, certain jurisdictions allow noncitizens to vote in local elections, such as municipal and school board polls.

Secure Election and Trump’s Claims

Highlighting the 2020 election’s security, Thompson emphasized that Trump lost to Biden by a significant margin of over seven million votes. Thompson criticized Trump’s recent statements, including his pledge to free Jan. 6 rioters if reelected.

Johnson’s Relationship with Trump Under Scrutiny

The event presents an opportunity for Johnson to demonstrate his strong alliance with Trump and the former president’s ties to House Republican leadership. This comes amid contentious issues such as the reauthorization of warrantless surveillance powers and aid to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

Critique of Trump and Johnson’s Motives

Thompson accused Trump and Johnson of prioritizing personal agendas over election integrity, aiming to support Trump’s campaign and seek retribution for power. Thompson emphasized the need for the public to see the truth behind the events of Jan. 6, challenging the narratives put forth by Trump and Johnson.
