Decoding a New Study: Do Evening Workouts Make Weight Loss Easier? | Health and Wellness News

The debate between early morning and evening workouts has persisted for years. Dr KP Singh, Director of Endocrinology at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, suggests that morning exercise can kickstart your metabolism, helping you burn calories throughout the day. Studies show that exercising in a fasted state may enhance fat oxidation and improve insulin sensitivity, making it ideal for weight loss. However, for late risers or shift workers, evening may be the best time to exercise. Research indicates that muscle strength and power may peak in the late afternoon or early evening, leading to improved exercise performance and gains in strength and muscle mass.

For individuals with diabetes, night activity may lower glucose levels in the morning, providing metabolic benefits. Those with Type 2 diabetes or obesity may benefit from exercising between 6 pm and midnight. For heart patients, the best time to exercise is between 8 am and 11 am. If aiming to lower blood pressure or build muscle, evening exercise is ideal. However, it is crucial to avoid exercising between midnight and 6 am to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Prof Rajesh Vijayvergiya from the Department of Cardiology at PGI, Chandigarh, emphasizes that the goal of exercise should be consistency and regularity. The timing of exercise should align with individual preferences, availability of free time, and personal goals. It is essential for individuals to feel stress-free, energetic, flexible, and able to concentrate on their work post-exercise. Ultimately, the best time to exercise is when it fits into one’s schedule, preferences, and natural rhythm. Some thrive on the energy of morning workouts, while others prefer the stress-relief and social aspects of evening exercise.

It is crucial not to discourage individuals from exercising by making blanket recommendations. The key is to find a time that works for each individual to meet the weekly quota of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity. Whether it’s in the morning, lunchtime, or evening, consistency and adherence to a routine are essential for reaping the benefits of exercise.
