Marywood University to Host Violence Prevention Forum
Join Defenders of Democracy at Nazareth Hall
Scranton, Lackawanna Co. – New at ten tonight:
On Thursday, Marywood University will play host to a civic group called Defenders of Democracy. The event will take place at the university’s Nazareth Hall, and it promises to be an informative forum dedicated to violence prevention education.
Depoliticizing Violence Prevention
One of the primary goals of this forum is to shift the conversation surrounding violence prevention away from politics. Dr. Mathew Schaffer, the director of psychological services at the university, is determined to focus on the essential components of high-quality, evidence-based threat assessment and risk assessment.
Threat assessment, as Dr. Schaffer explains, revolves around evaluating the current dangerousness of an individual to commit acts of violence, often targeted at specific individuals or groups. On the other hand, risk assessment is based on the individual’s history and helps determine the level of risk they pose to the public.
Special Guest Speaker
A highlight of the forum will be the keynote speech delivered by Michael Fanone, a former metropolitan officer who experienced firsthand the violence during the January 6th attack on the capital.
