New York State Grants for Home Efficiency Upgrades
Low-Income Families Eligible for Home Efficiency Grants
New York State is now offering grants to low-income families for home efficiency and electrification upgrades. This initiative aims to help families reduce energy costs and transition to cleaner energy sources.
Inflation Reduction Act Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates Program
The $39.6 million funding for the Inflation Reduction Act Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates Program (HEAR) will allow more families to make energy-efficient upgrades in their homes. This program aligns with the State’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support disadvantaged communities.
State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act
The program is in line with the State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2050. Additionally, the Act requires that a significant portion of clean energy investments benefit disadvantaged communities.
Funding Details
The Department of Energy’s IRA Home Energy Rebate programs will provide a total of $317.7 million in funding. This includes $159.3 million for Home Efficiency Rebates and $158.4 million for the HEAR program. Additional rebates are expected to be deployed later this year.
Eligibility and Enrollment
Owners of one- to four-family households with a household income below 80% of the Area Median Income or those participating in a utility payment assistance program will automatically qualify for IRA HEAR incentives. These incentives will be provided through the EmPower+ program to make energy efficiency upgrades more affordable for New Yorkers.
