A government watchdog group uncovered a trove of text messages from Homeland Security officials reacting to the influx of Donald Trump supporters at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

Insights from the Text Messages

Released after a lawsuit by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), the texts provided details about the events leading up to the insurrection.

Chris Tomney, the Director of Homeland Security Situational Awareness, expressed concern about armed individuals within the mob.

As the situation escalated, officers were instructed not to engage immediately but to get as close as possible.

Amidst the chaos, officials shared their reactions, acknowledging the intensity of the events.

Missing Texts and Legal Action

CREW filed a lawsuit alleging that federal agencies illegally deleted Jan. 6-related texts, potentially erasing crucial evidence about the attack on democracy.

The group emphasized the importance of uncovering the reasons behind the government’s lack of preparedness and potential misconduct by Trump administration officials.

CREW urged the Department of Justice to investigate the extent of the missing records and hold those responsible for their deletion.

Call for Accountability

Adam Rappaport, CREW’s General Counsel, emphasized the need for immediate action to address the gaps in information left by the deleted texts.

The lawsuit aims to shed light on the events of Jan. 6 and ensure accountability for any wrongdoing related to the Capitol riot.

A representative from DHS did not respond to requests for comment regarding the released text messages.
