New Initiative Unveiled to Lower Household Energy Costs

Gov. Kathy Hochul, together with U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm, revealed a federal program known as the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) Program. This initiative offers rebates to low-income New Yorkers for energy efficiency upgrades, aiming to reduce household energy costs.

New Yorkers Leading the Way in Energy Efficiency

New Yorkers are the first in the nation to access the rebate program, with $39.6 million in rebates now available. These rebates enable low-income families to make essential energy efficiency and electrification upgrades, reducing energy costs and promoting a shift away from fossil fuels.

Supporting Climate Goals Through Energy Efficiency

This initiative aligns with the state’s objectives under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85 percent by 2050. The program emphasizes the importance of energy-efficient upgrades like heat pumps and insulation to achieve these goals.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer commended the program for its role in reducing energy costs and carbon pollution. With a $40 million federal boost, the HEAR program makes energy efficiency upgrades more affordable for New Yorkers, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Eligibility and Application Process

Low-income New Yorkers residing in one- to four-family households earning below 80 percent of the Area Median Income can apply for these rebates. Residents are encouraged to visit the NYSERDA website for more information on eligibility criteria and the application process.
