Charges Against Palm Harbor Man for Capitol Riots

A Palm Harbor resident, Michael Hennessey, is facing a felony charge and multiple misdemeanor charges for his involvement in the January 6 riots at the Capitol in Tampa, Florida. He was arrested for his participation in the riots, where he was captured on camera among the initial group of rioters to breach the Capitol.

Events Leading to Arrest

Hennessey, 38, was prominently featured in the mob that moved through the Capitol building, spending nearly an hour inside and entering the House majority leader’s office multiple times. He was also one of the first individuals to ascend the stairs from West Plaza to the Capitol’s Upper West Terrace, chanting “Our House” with other protestors.

Identification and Charges

In December 2021, the FBI received a tip identifying Hennessey in images taken inside the Capitol. Almost a year later, he confessed to special agents about his actions and involvement in the riots. He positioned himself in confrontations with Capitol Police officers and was caught on camera filming inside the Rotunda.

Legal Proceedings

Hennessey faces charges of felony civil disorder and multiple misdemeanors related to his actions during the riots. He was arrested, released on pretrial conditions, and is restricted to travel within the Tampa area and Washington D.C. for court-related events. Additionally, he must comply with firearm restrictions and submit to random substance testing if required.

National Impact

He will make his first court appearance in the Middle District of Florida, amid a nationwide crackdown on individuals involved in the January 6 riots. Over 1,385 individuals have been charged across the country for their roles in the events at the Capitol.
