Overview
A person suspected of shooting a worker and starting a fire at a Miami residential building is now in custody, according to authorities. The fire broke out at Temple Court Apartments on Monday morning, resulting in a massive response from over 125 firefighters who battled the blaze for eight hours.
Fire Incident Details
The fire was reported around 8:15 a.m. ET, with firefighters conducting heroic rescues of more than 40 people, some of whom were saved from their balconies. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez revealed that there was an explosion during the evacuation, making it the first three-alarm fire in the city in 25 years.
Victim and Investigation
First responders discovered a man shot inside the building, who was then rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The property’s manager, Atlantic Housing Foundation, confirmed that the victim was an employee of the complex. Authorities assured that all residents, primarily elderly individuals, have been safely located, though the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed.
Cause of Fire
Firefighters found the fire originating on the third floor of the wood-frame building, which contributed to its rapid spread. The exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation, with three firefighters and a resident having been hospitalized as a result of the incident.
Support for Displaced Residents
Following the fire, the management company is arranging temporary accommodation for the 43 displaced residents in a nearby hotel for the next two weeks. Atlantic Housing Foundation emphasized their commitment to assisting in the investigation and supporting those affected by the tragic events.
