A 23-year-old woman from Miami Lakes, Florida, has been arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges for her participation in the January 6 Capitol riot, according to federal authorities. Barbara Balmaseda, the accused, is believed to have been among the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol in an effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election results and support former president Donald Trump.
The Arrest and Court Appearance
Balmaseda was arrested on Thursday by authorities and has since made an appearance in federal court in the Southern District of Florida. Prosecutors have presented images showing her both inside and outside of the Capitol building, along with a large group of rioters.
Alleged Actions During the Riot
According to authorities, Balmaseda climbed on equipment that had been prepared for the inauguration in order to gain closer access to the northwest stairs of the Capitol. This action was allegedly taken to breach the building and contribute to the chaos.
Charges Faced by Balmaseda
Barbara Balmaseda is facing multiple charges related to her involvement in the Capitol riot. She is charged with a felony offense of obstruction of an official proceeding, as well as misdemeanor charges of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or grounds, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.
Florida’s Involvement in the Capitol Attack
