York Man Charged in U.S. Capitol Attack

Gerald Powell, a 51-year-old resident of York, is facing charges for his involvement in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

First Court Appearance

Powell made his first court appearance on Friday, where he was charged with both felony and misdemeanor offenses.

Riotous Behavior

Court documents reveal that Powell was part of a group of rioters who were engaged in a physical struggle to gain control of a line of bike rack barricades and police barriers.

He was identified as one of the initial 20 rioters who breached the police line and proceeded beyond it.

Actions Inside the Capitol

After breaching the police line, Powell reportedly went back, moved barricades aside, and widened the opening.

He then entered the Capitol, circled the rotunda while holding an American flag, and exited the building after approximately 10 minutes.

Nationwide Ramifications

Over 1,400 individuals from across the United States have been charged in connection with the U.S. Capitol breach.

Of those, more than 500 people are specifically charged with assaulting or obstructing law enforcement officials.
