Arrest Made on Capitol Hill

Law enforcement officials have reported that a man was arrested on Tuesday across from Union Station on Capitol Hill. The suspect was spotted walking around in the park near Union Station carrying a “long gun.” U.S. Capitol Police swiftly responded to the situation and commanded the suspect to drop the weapon. When he failed to comply, officers deployed a taser to apprehend him.

Identity of the Suspect Revealed

The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Ahmir Lavon Merrell from Atlanta. Shockingly, Merrell is a registered sex offender in Georgia. Fortunately, he was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention and is expected to recover from the tasering incident.

Unknown Motive

Authorities are perplexed as to why Merrell was in possession of a firearm in the park. Although the gun resembled an AR-15, it was confirmed to be a semi-automatic weapon. U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger has stated that there are indications of potential mental health issues, but the motive remains a mystery. The investigation is still ongoing.

Safety Measures Taken

Following the arrest, bomb technicians conducted a thorough search of the backpack that Merrell was carrying. As a precautionary measure, officers cleared the park while the investigation was underway. Fortunately, the police have stated that there is no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat, ensuring the public’s safety.

Proximity to the Capitol

The incident occurred in a small park near Union Station, which is located in close proximity to three Senate office buildings. Witnesses observed officers sprinting towards the Capitol as the situation unfolded, highlighting the urgency of the response.

Transportation Method Unknown

It remains unclear how Merrell arrived at the park. Authorities have yet to determine whether he utilized public transportation, walked to the location, or drove a vehicle.

Previous Incident

This arrest comes just days after another concerning incident near the Capitol Building. A man with a modified gun was apprehended following a car crash into a barrier. Court documents revealed that he had been released on supervised release after a prior gun charge.
