—
Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot after a government meeting and is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.
Reports indicated that several shots were fired at Fico, with his condition not immediately known. Emergency services dispatched a helicopter ambulance to the scene.
Location and Circumstances of the Shooting
The incident occurred in the town of Handlova, approximately two hours away from the capital city of Bratislava, where a government off-site meeting was taking place.
Reactions to the Attack
Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová condemned the attack on Prime Minister Fico, describing it as “brutal and reckless.” She expressed shock and wished for his speedy recovery.
Fico, who won a third term as prime minister last October, had been critical of western support for Ukraine, aligning himself with the Kremlin’s views.
International Response
European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with Fico and his family.
Orban, a close ally of Fico, called the attack “heinous” and offered prayers for his friend’s health and recovery.
