Interim Suspension

The Palestine Solidarity Committee at the University of Texas at Austin has been placed on “interim suspension” due to an “alleged violation of institutional rules,” according to university spokesman Brian Davis.

“To be clear, the group is on interim suspension. Not the individuals. Length of suspension is determined by the Dean of Students office,” Davis said in a statement.

Suspension Details

The group, which organized a recent event that faced a large police presence, responded to the suspension on Instagram, calling it “an attack on free speech to distract from and enable israel’s genocidal campaign against the Palestinian people!”

CNN is seeking clarification on the implications of the interim suspension for the Palestine Solidarity Committee. The group had plans for a vigil, but it is uncertain if that will proceed amid the suspension.

University Stand

The university defended its decision to involve law enforcement to prevent the rally, resulting in numerous arrests and clashes. The Office of the Dean of Students had warned the group about potential disciplinary action if the event proceeded.

Event Clarification

Despite using provocative language in promotional posts, members of the Palestine Solidarity Committee clarified that they had no intention of setting up encampments on the lawn or staying overnight during the event.

University Response

University President Jay Hartzell stated that efforts to halt the event were based on credible indications of potential disruption, noting that a significant portion of those arrested had no affiliation with the university.

Hartzell highlighted that previous pro-Palestinian events at the university had taken place without incident.
