Giants Secure Matt Chapman
The San Francisco Giants have made a major move by signing Matt Chapman to a lucrative three-year, $54 million deal. This agreement, reported by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, includes a salary of $20 million in the first year, followed by $18 million and $16 million in the subsequent years, with opt-outs available after the first two seasons.
Chapman’s Performance
Chapman’s 2023 season started on a high note when he was named the AL Player of the Month in April for his outstanding performance at the plate. However, his success peaked early, and he struggled to maintain his form throughout the rest of the season. Despite this, Chapman displayed a strong ability to make contact, evident in his impressive hard-hit rate and barrel rate, ranking among the best in MLB.
Defensive Prowess
While Chapman’s defensive metrics saw a slight decline during his time with the Toronto Blue Jays, he remains a reliable asset at third base. As a four-time Gold Glove winner and two-time Platinum Glove winner, Chapman’s defensive skills are well-established, with a significant number of Outs Above Average recorded in the previous season.
Career Highlights
Chapman, originally a first-round Draft pick by the Oakland A’s in 2014, spent the initial five seasons of his MLB career with the team. He consistently performed well offensively, maintaining a high wRC+ among qualified third basemen. In particular, his 2019 season stood out with a career-high 36 home runs and an impressive .848 OPS, earning him a spot in the All-Star team.
