Reducing Prescription Drug Costs
As the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region 3 Director, I work with communities facing high uninsured rates and chronic health conditions, particularly among Black and Latino Americans. The Inflation Reduction Act aims to make essential drugs more affordable, improving overall health outcomes.
Closing Health Disparities Gap
President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act is a crucial step in improving health care access, lowering prescription drug costs, and reducing health disparities among Medicare recipients. While progress is being made, structural and systemic discrimination continue to hinder access to health care for people of color and minority groups.
Key Benefits for Minorities
The Inflation Reduction Act has capped the cost of covered insulin products at $35 per month for Black and Latino Medicare beneficiaries. This measure not only provides financial relief but also peace of mind for families struggling to afford necessary medication.
Ensuring Affordable Prescription Drugs
The law also caps out-of-pocket drug costs to ensure affordability for those in need. In 2024, Medicare recipients facing high drug costs will no longer pay out-of-pocket once they reach about $3,500. Next year, further cost reductions will be implemented, benefiting many seniors and people with disabilities.
Promoting Health Equity
More efforts are needed to reduce racial health disparities. As the HHS Regional Director, I am dedicated to advancing health equity. Thanks to President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, more individuals have access to affordable health coverage, addressing the challenges faced by people of color in obtaining necessary care and medication.
