Tragic Mountain Lion Attack in Northern California
Details of the Incident
A mountain lion attack took place in a remote area of Northern California, resulting in one fatality and one injury. The incident occurred while two brothers, aged 18 and 21, were engaged in antler shed hunting in Georgetown, California.
Response and Actions Taken
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife promptly euthanized the mountain lion responsible for the attack. Through DNA matching at the Wildlife Forensics Laboratory, authorities confirmed the animal’s identity and its connection to the scene of the tragic event.
Rescue Operation
Following the attack, the younger brother contacted emergency services at 1:13 p.m. to report the situation. Deputies initiated a search and located the mountain lion near the older brother at 1:46 p.m. In an attempt to deter the predator, shots were fired by law enforcement.
Victims and Location
Tragically, the 21-year-old brother succumbed to his injuries before assistance could reach him. The 18-year-old brother sustained severe facial injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The identities of the victims have not been disclosed. Georgetown, where the incident occurred, is situated approximately 40 miles northeast of Sacramento.
Incidence of Mountain Lion Attacks
While rare, mountain lion attacks on humans do occur. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, there have been 13 reported attacks in the state since 2004, with only one resulting in a fatality.
