Identifying the Suspect

Federal authorities have arrested John Emanuel Banuelos, a fervent supporter of Donald Trump, in connection to the shots fired at the Capitol on Jan. 6. He was seen brandishing a firearm in a video from that day, as well as in footage published by Jan. 6 rioter Derrick Evans.

Legal Proceedings

Banuelos, currently residing in Summit, Illinois, was apprehended by federal agents and appeared in court in Illinois following his arrest. He was also linked to a fatal stabbing incident in Utah shortly after the Capitol attack, although he was not charged in that case.

First Gunshot of the Day

While many rioters carried firearms on Jan. 6, Banuelos is the first to be accused of discharging his weapon. He allegedly fired two shots outside the Capitol around 2:34 p.m., preceding the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt. This marked the initial gunshot of the day by a member of the pro-Trump mob.

Evidence and FBI Investigation

Charging documents detail Banuelos waving the crowd towards him before pulling out what appeared to be a firearm. The FBI analyzed footage showing Banuelos raising the gun and firing two shots into the air, confirming the weapon’s operability.

Online Presence and Responses

Banuelos made posts online, including a video showcasing a semi-automatic weapon, and engaged with law enforcement following the Capitol incident. His Instagram account recently alluded to a spiritual battle between truth and deception in response to media inquiries.

Legal Ramifications

Over 1,300 individuals have faced charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, with numerous convictions and sentences handed down. Banuelos joins the ranks of those held accountable for their involvement in the unprecedented breach of the U.S. Capitol.
