Valeria and Andriy’s love story began three years before the siege, filled with travel, outdoor adventures, and dreams of a big wedding. Their plans were altered when war broke out, forcing them to seek shelter in the Azovstal steelworks.
A Wedding Amidst Destruction
Despite the harsh conditions underground, Andriy proposed to Valeria with tin-foil rings in a makeshift ceremony. They exchanged vows in their uniforms, promising a proper wedding once they returned home. Tragically, Andriy was killed in action two days later.
Surviving Captivity and Loss
Valeria spent 11 months in Russian captivity, enduring torture and abuse. She was finally released in a prisoner exchange and returned to Ukraine. The devastation in Mariupol was immense, with thousands dead and buildings destroyed. Valeria’s husband’s body remains at the steel plant in the now-occupied city.
