Gettysburg National Military Park Receives $400,000 to Combat Forest Loss and Study Climate Change

Funding for Resilient Forest Initiative

The Gettysburg National Military Park, located in Pennsylvania, has recently been granted $429,000 from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to address the critical issue of catastrophic forest loss and research the impacts of climate change on inland and river landscapes.

Restorative Efforts for Future Generations

This substantial funding will be allocated towards supporting the Resilient Forest Initiative, which aims to restore and sustain native forests for the benefit of future generations. The project will focus on enhancing resilience in the forest ecosystem at Gettysburg NMP and 18 other Northeast national parks through invasive plant management and native tree seedling planting.

Acting Superintendent Kristina Heister expressed gratitude for the IRA funding, emphasizing the importance of implementing best practices to address various challenges such as white-tailed deer overpopulation, invasive plant species, extreme weather events, and changing climate conditions. Comprehensive Planning and Database Creation

In addition to direct conservation efforts, the funding will be utilized to establish a comprehensive spatial database that merges cultural resource data with climate projections. This integrated approach will enhance resource protection planning and management within the park.

National Park Service Workforce

It is noteworthy that the National Park Service, which oversees 429 national parks across the United States, currently employs over 20,000 dedicated individuals to care for these natural treasures.
