Electrician Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Attacking Police During US Capitol Siege

A New Jersey electrician, Christopher Joseph Quaglin, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by a judge who described him as “a menace to our society” for his role in the January 6, 2021, siege at the US Capitol.

Violent Assaults on Police Officers

Quaglin, 38, was among the mob of Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol, where he engaged in violent clashes with police officers. During the siege, Quaglin physically assaulted officers, choked and tackled them to the ground, and used stolen police shields, metal bike racks, and pepper spray in his attacks.

Conspiracy Theories and Courtroom Drama

Throughout the courtroom proceedings, Quaglin argued with US District Judge Trevor McFadden, insulted the judge, and pushed conspiracy theories about the events of January 6. Despite attempts to minimize his actions, Quaglin was convicted of six separate assaults on police and accused of striking or pushing a dozen others.

Prosecutors pressed for a 14-year prison sentence, highlighting Quaglin’s violent behavior and his intent to disrupt the certification of President Joe Biden’s electoral victory. The judge ultimately sentenced Quaglin to 12 years, one of the longest terms handed down in Capitol riot cases.

Quaglin’s case is one of many stemming from the Capitol riot, with approximately 1,400 individuals facing federal charges. Nearly 900 defendants have already been sentenced, with Quaglin ranking among the few to receive a lengthy prison term.

Having traveled from New Jersey to attend the rally near the White House, Quaglin actively participated in storming the Capitol, attacking officers, and contributing to the chaos that unfolded during the siege. His actions were deemed “shocking and lawless” by the presiding judge.
