Mike Pence Condemns Trump’s Language on Jan. 6 Prisoners
Former Vice President Mike Pence strongly criticized former President Trump’s choice of words regarding individuals facing charges linked to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Pence expressed his disapproval, deeming it “unacceptable” for Trump to label these individuals as “hostages” as they navigate the legal system.
Pence, speaking on CBS News’s “Face the Nation,” emphasized the severity of the events of January 6, 2021, especially when he himself was a key target of the violent mob that breached the Capitol. He recalled the terrifying incident where a gallows was erected outside the Capitol, with the mob chanting, “Hang Mike Pence!”
Pence Stresses the Importance of Due Process
Despite acknowledging that some individuals may have been swept up in the moment and trespassed into the Capitol, Pence highlighted the need for due process, especially for nonviolent offenders. However, he underscored the tragic nature of the day, particularly the assaults on law enforcement officers that resulted in loss of life.
On the back of his recent announcement that he will not be endorsing Trump for the 2024 race, Pence’s remarks serve as a further indication of the growing rift between the two former allies.
Trump’s Controversial Remarks
Trump’s characterization of the Jan. 6 detainees as “hostages” and his assertion that they have been treated unfairly has sparked controversy. Trump pledged to address the situation promptly upon assuming office, describing the detainees as “unbelievable patriots.”
